DESTINATION ALENTEJO - PORTUGAL

The Alentejo is an extensive region covering almost a third of Portugal. The boundary to the north is the River Tagus (Tejo) and to the south the hills of the Algarve. In the east, it shares a frontier with Spain and in the west it opens on to the Atlantic Ocean. Essentially rural and sparsely populated, it offers a landscape that is uncommonly well conserved. Its scenic beauty and the abundance and quality of the heritage found in its archaeology, its monuments, its architecture and its gastronomy make it an exceptional place for the kind if discovery provided by nature and cultural tourism.

The character of the Alentejo requires you to leave the highways and favour secondary roads which offer the best means of enjoying a landscape made up of cork oak woodland, wheat fields, vineyards and olive grooves and to make contact with a people that are friendly and hospitable by nature.

The Convento do Espinheiro, Hotel & Spa, one of the only two Luxury Collection hotels in Portugal, was inaugurated in all its splendour. Just 2kms away from the city of Évora, the hotel is surrounded by 8 hectares of beautiful gardens and its interior has been luxuriously decorated, maintaining the character of old times. The actual convent features 17 rooms and 6 suites, whereas the new wing features 36 garden view rooms. In September 2008, 33 new rooms were inaugurated, thus totalising 92 rooms.

Perfectly combining the old and the new, the hotel offers a Gastronomic Restaurant located in the former wine-cellar and a Piano Bar in what used to be the old kitchen used by the monks. An area for wine tasting and the savouring of regional dishes has been created in the old gothic water deposit and numerous meeting and event facilities are perfect for the celebration of different types of business meetings or celebrations. The church, with its valuable golden engravings and ancient hand painted Portuguese tiles has been carefully restored. Here, mass is celebrated once a month and weddings and christenings may be held.

Immersed in history, the Convento do Espinheiro offers a peaceful and inspiring atmosphere, ideal for a relaxed stay.

Grand Deluxe Design
Extra-spacious rooms, located in the new wing. The decoration is inspired in the romantic Hollywood movies of the ‘50s. Offer a privileged view of the Garcia de Resende Chappel. Equipped with king-size bed, mini-bar, safe, telephone, wireless Internet and plasma TV. Marble bathroom with fabulous jacuzzi.
Grand Deluxe Heritage
Located in the old convent, close to the bell tower, this room is accessed by a narrow medieval staircase. An extra-spacious room, combining bedroom and lounge area. Once used by Princess Isabel. Equipped with king-size bed, mini-bar, safe, telephone, wireless Internet and plasma TV. Marble bathroom with fabulous Jacuzzi.
Deluxe Suite
Located in the old convent, these are rooms that were once used by Portuguese kings when visiting the city of Évora. All are equipped with air-conditioning, international direct dialling, LCD plasma TV, in-room movies, DVD player, CD player/radio, in-room safe, mini bar, slippers, bathrobes, hair-dryer and Bulgari bathroom amenities.
Royal Suite
Named after King John II of Portugal, this luxuriously decorated suite is equipped with air-conditioning, international direct dialling, LCD plasma TV, in-room movies, DVD player, CD player/radio, in-room safe, mini bar, slippers, bathrobes, hair-dryer and Bulgari bathroom amenities The bathroom is equipped with an LCD plasma TV and a beautiful bathtub designed by Philip Stark. The private terrace situated above the suite offers the best view of the city of Évora.
Restaurants & Lounges
Divinus Restaurant
Located in the old wine-cellar, this is a gourmet restaurant with mediterranean cuisine and Alentejo flavours. Has a smart and elegant atmosphere. Reservation is recomended. Open from 7.30pm to 10.30pm
Claustrus
Open for breakfast and “à la carte” lunches, with mediterranean cuisine. It is situated in the convent’s beautiful cloisters and offers a relaxing atmosphere. Open from 7.30am to 10.30am and 12.30pm to 3.00pm.
Pulpitus Bar
Situated in the old kitchen used by the monks, this bar serves refreshments, cocktails and snacks in a cosy atmosphere. Open from 10.30am to 1.00am.
Cisterna / Wine Bar
Located in the gothic water deposit, this is the ideal place for pre-dinner relaxation and savouring of the extensive collection of regional and international wines. Our expert sommelier can also assist with private wine-tasting. Open from 5.00pm to 12.00am.
Aqua Lounge Pool Bar
Located by our outdoor pools, offers a relaxing and trendy atmosphere and privileged view of the gardens. Is open during the warm spring and summer nights, from 10.30am and 7pm. The menu is varied, offering sandwiches, salads, “tapas”, etc.

Our largest meeting room (3770 sq. ft.), ideal for wedding receptions, for example, can accommodate up to 250 people and offers state-of-the-art facilities, modern technology and natural daylight.
S. Jerónimo Meeting Room
A modern conference room (1400 sq. ft.), with natural daylight, featuring high-technology equipment. Can accommodate up to 110 people.
Lagar
A large room that may be divided into 3 separate zones, the largest of which holds up to 150 people and offers natural daylight.
Stª Maria / Frei Carlos / Biblioteca Meeing Rooms
3 different boardrooms situated on the first floor of the convent, featuring a classic decoration. Each of them can seat up to a maximum of 16 people in boardroom style.

Outdoor Pools. Situated on the west side of the hotel, facing the city of Évora, is the large outdoor pool, surrounded by a beautiful wooden sundeck. Beside it is the smaller, children´s pool.
